Well, I can try to inject some life into the discourse. I
am new to the site and relatively new to the game (3 years)
so I am building up my collection with the help of Ebay
and this site's custodian. As the sole supplier of GE cards
to my local gaming group I am always on the lookout for
more cards, deck strategies and answers, so I hope to post
here somewhat frequently.

Hi Marhawkman,

Thanks for the nice welcome, I have come across board game
geek but have not posted there yet. I did notice that
Galactusprime has put out a players wanted ad there, which
is a good idea.
I was hoping to start a post asking players like yourself
for some good decks you play as there is only a couple
listed on this site but it seems I am not able to make new
posts, any reason why?

Thanks will contact Galactus. As for what race? Well
here's the deal, since I am the only one in my gaming
group with GE cards it is easier to turn up on game
nights and let the guys pick a preconstructed deck of
their chosen race. Eventually when we learn all the rules
I may be able to get them to buy cards but in the
meantime I just need decent decks to play with; any race
will do but a variety is better than concentrating on one
race. The only exception is CC as I don't have cards from
that set and have little interest in it until I complete
the rest.

Aesthetic: I have no idea how to even try playing these guys, either way there aren't many of them.

Aqaaran: these guys are fun because they don't have cards that are ships OR bases they have cards that are BOTH.  Also their heavy weapons penetrate shields if in base mode.

Argonians: These tend towards defensive tactics.  They have surprisingly few ships considering the age of the faction....

Bolaar: they have relatively weak ships, but the special faction rules make them interesting to play.  And the faction counts as "pirates" so they get to use the pirate stuff.

Clydon: These guys are FUN!  Especially with the whole powerlink effect.  In some ways they're similar to Krebiz, but less awkward to use.

Collector: only one ship... meh.

Corporate: I like using them in a scorched Earth style deck.  Where I try to cripple opposing fleets by destroying their terrain and infrastructure.  Enhanced variable plasma is BRUTAL when fired at planets!  3 ammo and 3 energy(S10 Corporate Flagship) to do NINE heavy weapon damage?  YES PLEASE!  Corporate ships are a bit light on phasers though, so in ship to ship combat they're somewhat weak.  Also to get the most of of Variable Plasma you need a special form of heavy weapon upgrade.

Corporate Pirate: see Corporate, but these guys get to use Pirate Toys.

Dragon: Since dragons are their own card type that is different from ships and monsters, these decks typically have few, if any, ships.  You really need to get the special dragon terrain to make the best use of them though.

Drone: Deflectors are annoying, and a good reason to play scorched earth instead of ship to ship combat.  These guys have few heavy weapons.  They do have a special weapon that does damage to all terrain in an opposing fleet though.

Erodi: these guys are amusing to play.  Ion and Nova cannons are.... interesting, to say the least.

Filarians: There are no Filarian ships, or crew....  Filarians are actually a race of ABILITY cards that have a parasitic attachment to crew.

Gekonauak: a race with no shields?  Not as bad as you think if you use their damage avoidance tricks adequately.

Generic: It's not advisable to actually use these as a faction, though you can.  these usually get used to complement one of the non-ship factions (Dragon, Filarians, nobles, Time Knights, etc)  Some of these ships are cool enough to get used in the space navies of actual factions.

Indirigan: not numerous, but ok-ish.

Indirigan Andromeda Bound: these guys are interesting because of the way their ships produce stuff.  you have less need for terrain, (but still some).  they don't have many ships though.

Indirigan Council of Six: most are immune to occurences, some are planet destruction specialists.

Indirigan Garshain: they like carriers, so use shuttles and fighters with them.

Indirigan Gray Death: emergency transporters make for much boarding party fun!

Indirigan Infected Tribe: built-in electronic warfare, and a mean special faction rule.  Infected tribe ships are plague ships, and crew can't leave them normally.

Indirigan Insipid: >_<' yet another one card faction

Indirigan Invincible Loner: only one ship, but it's a good one.

Indirigan Lone Wolf: meh, not interesting

Indirigan Meerkats: neat ability, but not enough to play as a real faction.  You'd have to splash these in a non-indirigan deck.

Indirigan Nagiridni Pirate: these guys are Pirates, and have a variety of fun tricks, and a lot of heavy weapons.  most of the good ones are Medici promos though.

Indirigan Propagationist: see insipid.... even worse this one is a WEAK ship.

Indirigan Vacater: only 3 ships, and mediocre ones.

Indirigan Vicious Six: these guys aren't numerous but they have a fun trick for draining enemy resources to power themselves.

Indirigan Vinciennes: promos with a scary array of abilities.

Indirigan Violators Pirate: like vicious six but true Pirates.  They only have 3 ships though.  I wish I could mix these with Vicious Six....

Jxar: Transgates are FUN!  IIRC they let you pay energy to play weak cards without it costing a card play.

Krebiz: These guys are awkward to play... The modular ship mechanic sounds cool until you realize that each of your chips cost 2 cards in hand.  there are some rules to fix that though, and the ships got printed in some sets in their combined forms.

Leopan: use a form of heavy armor instead of shields, kinda normal otherwise.

Mechad: distortion cannons are MEAN!  They damage all ships in an opposing fleet.  EMH is a bit weird.  It's like shielding but starts in an uncharged state, but can be recharged more easily.  subspace whips are nothing more than renamed phasers.

Nobles: a crew oriented faction, that needs to use generic ships.  reasonably powerful thoough.

Plasma Occupied Territory: I don't get the point behind the POT subfactions, there's only a few sub-faction ships and most aren't great.  Shield penetration devices are fun toys though.  POT ships tend to be heavy on heavy weapons.

Paktadon: Allied - POT, pulse phasers are a neat trick, but overall the race isn't that different to play.

Paraloid: Allied - Clydon, very similar to the Clydon.

Psycanti: one of the Psi empires, they don't have their own ships and must "borrow" them.  Psi decks are different in that they use "field" cards with their Psi cards.

Scorpead: Scorp ships are BRUTAL in ship to ship combat.  Especially with upgrades, a NON-upgraded Battleship can dish out 12 damage.  Adding upgrades can push that upwards of 20-30.

Shon-ti: allied - Zedan, I don't remember what swarm bolts do(if anything)

Tarraki: Allied - Argonian, auxiliary shields are a fun ability.  I forget what positron emitters do.  Might be similar to heavy weapons.

Time Knights: these are annoying,  they're CREW that can fight ships on their own.

Tranoan: a ship based counterpart to the Time Knights.

Treglean: cluster mounted weapons.  Treg ships have relatively high weapon numbers but their weapons are in groups, all weapons in each group are fired simultaneously at the same target.

Trochilidae: Allied - Leopan, maneuvering thrusters need to have a maneuvre card played to the ship to work.

Tufor: Mine deployers need to have a mine card played to the ship in order for them to work.  they allow you to use the mine once each turn, as long as you keep the mine deployer powered.

Vektrean: similar to Bolaar, but with less cards overall, but they do have the advantage of several ship/terrain and base/terrain cards. (Technically you can use them in any deck, but I only use them in Vektrean decks.)

Visonic: see Psycanti

Zedan: Detonium bolts get to fire at enemies who atttack your ship.  They are relatively few though.

Scary huh? hehehe....  LOTS of factions to choose from!

Hi all!

I'm one of the guys who discovered this game from BoardGameGeek.

That website led me to the GE Card Museum website, which convinced me
to buy some cards. I'd always heard that GE had terrible art, but after
looking at the cards themselves on the Museum website, I realized that
most of the cards look pretty good, and some really great.

So now I have a pile of cards inbound via mail but no one locally to play
against. Has anyone ever come up with a solitaire variant for GE?

Due to the way the way you shoot at other ships solitair
would be tuff.
The best idea I can come up w/ is to play 2 decks and
come up w/automatic fireing rules where the biggest ships
in one fleet shoot at the biggest ships in the other
fleet,then on down the line,then play defence cards from
the highest to the lowest

for another point,Ive never had much trouble recruting
players,even when the game was long dead.Ive recruted
from my D&D game and my daughters High School friends.It
will attract smarter players that want something more
challanging than Magic

But yeah, the first set DID have cruddy art.  The later sets were a great improvement.  Some of the artists who worked on later sets also did art for Magic the Gathering.

The C5 Pstber Mage is good on its own but works well in a
'Splash " of psy in anoother deck
The other cards to go with it are the E4&8 (iI cant
remember the name....) along w/ the Field of minor
wilding? which has an awsome level one ability to
eliminate all the shields of a target
I call these decks Special Forces

In reply to Marhawkman's post, I am only going to remark on the major empires. Most of the races are minor and you would use them sparingly as support of the major races.

Aqaaran: Now if only they could partner with the POT.

Argonians: Honestly, they didn't need any additional firepower. For the vanilla of the races they won their equal share of the games.

Clydon: We tried and tried to make a small ship empire work. This is the second such empire. It still didn't work. I think we finally got it right with J'xar.

Corporate: This empire lost a bit of power with the introduction of the promo terrain. Making it harder to destroy terrain. Still 9 damage to an opponents ship will still kill.

Dragon: Also, Monsters work really well with Dragons.

Drone: Probably the best of the Allied races. c

Filarians: This 'Empire' never really worked. It relied on your opponent having crew cards in play. And there are too many ways to get rid of them.

Gekonauak: We thought that not giving them shields would be enough of a detriment. We were wrong. Especially with indestructible terrain (promo), they are a force to be reckoned with. See my deck elsewhere for an example.

Indirigan: With the promo cards there are plenty of ships to choose from. Council of Six being the strongest. With Garshain having the same fire back ability they could stand as their own empire or as good support ships for the Zedan.

Jxar: We finally got the carriers to work. Yay!

Krebiz: They got 'fixed' in Universe Edition. Although, I still think they aren't worth playing.

Leopan: The trick is to not use the shields, save your ship and then your ship would still have the shields to protect it from other opponents and monsters.

Mechad: pair this empire up with Tranoan and you got ships that eradicate entire fleets.

Nobles: bah. Crew are too easily effected.

Plasma Occupied Territory: The subfactions were to have an entire expansion that never got to see the light of day. I didn't even do any design yet they were just that far in the future. Shield Penetrators with a back up of Boarding Parties are where its at.

Psycanti and Visonic: These Psy races can be deadly if left unchecked. Most people eliminate them first, and then go about to play GE.

Scorpead: And, put a Cat Rep on an upgraded Battleship can wipe out more then one fleet. Game Over.

Shon-ti: The Shon-ti use Swarm Bolts to attack multiple targets at a single location. Swarm Bolts cause 1 point of damage to the target and every eligible target not already targeted this player turn in the stack. May target terrain protected by a base.

Time Knights: the really annoying ones are the C10 that negate a card just played, the C9 that stops a reaction card, the C7 that stops an Occurrence card, and the C5 that can rearrange stacks.

Tufor: Problem is there are very few mines worth using it. Anitmatter, Stasis, and... hmmm, I thought we did another big mine an E7?

Vektrean: The trick to these is the Command Points. They have them out the Wazoo. So, you can deploy more ships then your opponents.

Zedan: another race that is slowly expanding into this region of space. These and the Leopans would have gotten one or two ships over the next few expansions.

looks like a really cool game.

Has anyone ever tried a play-by-forum game, like marhawkman mentioned?
How exactly does that work? I tried a google search on the general principles
but came up empty.

It would be very slow,one card play or 1 weapons fire a
turn
because you would have to wait for reactions but Id be
willing to try it!
youd just have to trust the other player for not cheating

how many S 5 or higherand Ill put in the same
Ill also need to know what Luck cards you have,again to
keeo it fair
and what race you are playing(I asume due to your posts
Scorpead)
Ill play Argonian to give you a better chance or Corp if
you want a challange
PS your cards should have arrived by now let me know
as to the rules we need to play one card at a time and
await reactions otherwise the other player would know if
you are holding a card to play in reaction during weopons
fire(R cards count as card plays on your turn)
The first 2 turns we can post all three cards at a time
as no one is likely to be firing
I have the space and the cards to make a special deck and
not worry about it
let me know when your ready and give me the info above
and I can throw a deck together quickly
