Haven't played in over 10 years and only a couple of times back then so please pardon my ignorance on this question.

How often do players attempt there-and-back missions?  Is it strategical part of the game or just a side part that is used once in a while?  I'm trying to figure how it works exactly.  Please tell me if the following example is correct and if not please show me my errors :)

Player A has a Heavy Fighter with a Marauder on it and a Survey Shuttle with a Mercenary on it.  He decides to send both of these crew against player B who has in play a S2 Space Yacht with a Captain and Science Officer on it.

Nothing is able to be played to stop this so now both crew from Player A are on the Space Yacht.  The Mercenary kills the Science Officer since they both are C2.  The Marauder gets to do two actions so he kills the Captain and causes 2 points of structural damage.  Does this damage count against the shields?  I didn't think so since the Marauder is inside the ship.  If not then does it lower the ship from an S2 to an S0 meaning the ship is destroyed?  If so do the Marauder and the Mercenary hop back into their transports and escape to safety before the Space Yacht goes down?

Again sorry for the noobie question, don't be surprised if I ask more soon.

Thanks.

First of all you do t an bs one at a time,in either the a or b phase

and yes the crew attacks ignore shields, except for R/C 10 Yorl and R/C^ Time Assault teams altho my group errats them to work like all the othere combat crew

and yes the ship is destroyed and yes the combat crew escape safely

I'm relatively certain you can't do a crew attack if the sheilds are up.

First, on a There-and-Back Mission the crew is physically transported to the location. This means they can do their damage directly to the structure of the ship or base - even if the rules on the card are a little ambiguous about it. And yes, if the ship or base is reduced to 0 strength is it discarded, along with any cards played to it (except the cards performing a there-and-back; they are returned to their original location).

Second, shields do not stop a shuttle or transporter unless the card specifically states it's blocked by shields - which is true of about half the transporters and none of the shuttle/fighters.

Lastly, check out the Galactic Fire #2, which is available from the download page on this site. It has an article discussing There-And-Back missions in full.
