Okay, before we take yet another thread and ruin it.
The Crewman can only protect your crew versus cards played on them. The Marine is not a card played against one of your crew.

That makes sense... you play the Marine to your own fleet in reaction to a
crew attack, so it's not played to another card. If you use it on a there and
back mission, you're using the card action, not playing the card.
