What damage type do the Nova Cannon and Ion Cannon do?

Is the damage 'hazard card' damage and thus rules which affect 'hazard cards' apply to the damage?

Is the damage 'weapon damage' and therefore rules which affect weapon damage apply to these weapons?

I'm building a Tufor deck and I'm trying to work out the options for them. Once I get a feel for it I'll post the contents.

Thanks for your replies...

-Ion/Nova cannons and MDS are listed in the "special ship systems" section of the rules. They are not listed in any "weapon" section, as is easily observed.

The description for MDS states that the Mine cards are used and not discarded thanks to MDS ability. The ion/Nova entry is a bit more vague. But it does state that the hazard cards are basically loaded onto the ship and used as stated. The damage still comes from the card, and if not enough energy is used the card still discarded after use. As the card is not used as fuel but is simply applied and potentially retained, i would say the damage is card damage.

That's my thoughts on it, now let's see what the real answer is. Have a good afternoon.....Lobo

The Ion and Nova cannons use Ion Storms and Novas as their mode of
damage, which are hazards, which do card, and not weapons damage.
Mines are equipment cards, and are used during a card-play phase, which
also do card damage. Look at an E5 Anti-matter Mine for example.

Yes, the Ion and Nova Cannons use Ion and Nova storms the same way a MDS uses mines.

I thought this was the case but wanted some other's opinions before I used them for the first time.

I have a related question about timing.

Do the hazards and mine cards that are recycled via the special ship systems do their damage outside of the weapon fire phase? I think they do but again need some confirmation.

The question I'm trying to anticipate is, if I do a volley of phaser damage that leaves a target with 1 point of structure remaining can I then target the same unit with a mine/hazard deployed from a ship?

The rule I'm concerned about is the limitation on targeting a unit once per turn. After I've declared and resolved a weapon volley can I use a hazard/mine from an ion cannon/nova cannon/mds to target the same unit? Again, I think I can but am looking for others opinions.

you activate them in either of the card play phases.

Yes.

This is the great thing about mines and MDS's. You shoot the crap out of
somebody's ship and he plays a bunch of reaction cards that save it,
leaving it with, say, 2 points of structure left. In card play phase B then,
you activate the anti-matter mine, do 2 structure to the ship, and it then
dies. :)

In the group I play in, if you don't absolutely kill a ship with one shot, you
may not as well bother... we all have ended up building our decks with
enough economy and repair we can repair almost any ship once the game
is well underway. So, tactics like this are essential in our group for killing
some ships.
