and other cards that essentially say 'do one thing to do another thing' what if you can't do the 'one thing'?

L3 Aurora Effect says:

Played to your fleet.

Lasts for one complete turn.

Each card discarded due to opponent actions may be placed into the reserve fleet, discarding an equal or higher strength card from the reseve fleet instead.

Discarded after use.

If a player has an L3 Aurora Effect in play and is forced to discard a card that is higher strength than anything he has in the reserve fleet is he allowed to use the L3 Aurora Effect or not?

J--

-There are other cards that spawned this question at a recent game. The general concern that I had (and one we could not resolve) is this:

If a card says "must" as a condition of the card effect, if the "must" cannot occur can the card still be played?

Bad example: Let's pretend there is a B2 - Acme Protection Agency in play. And let's further pretend the rules portion of the card states that any opponent firing upon the B2 "must" discard a crew card if their volley damages the base. So, opponent fires enough to kill, they gotta discard. The question becomes:

If opponent has no crew cards anywhere in their deck, can they ever fire upon the base? Some CCGs say no in these situations, others say yes. What does GE say?

Thanks in advance, have a good one.....Lobo

The aurora effect is played by you onto your fleet during your turn, unless you have a card allowing you to play the aurora in reaction.  If an opponent's action causes you to discard a card then you have the choice to place it into the reserve fleet but when you do, a card already in the reserve fleet of equal or higher strength than the card you are placing there must be discarded. Once this is done, the aurora card is discarded and the card from the reserve fleet is discarded also.  OR at the end of one turn, during the discard phase the aurora is discarded if not used.

Galaktische - If you do not have a card of equal or higher in your reserve you cannot use the Aurora Effect.

Lobo - Yes, you can still fire.
