Lobo seems to like to build small fast GE Duel decks. As far as I know, the smallest deck you can build is 40 cards (8 categories with 5 cards each).

I'd like to challenge all of you to build the most effective deck possible using only 40 cards and following all of the rules in the version 2.1 ruleset on Eric's web-site.

I think this means you wont be able to use any exceptions and therefore you wont be able to inlcude any entities. I could be wrong, if you can figure out a way to include them without violating the 40 card limit and other rules then let us know how.

When you post your deck include your design ideas and why you think it is most effective. When we're done we can vote on the most effective and Geko can give the winner some obscure bit of treasure he must have! :)

If the response is good enough I'll give the winner a card autographed by the artist. I have a few of them... nothing special but hey, it could be fun.

Lobo and I can proxy the decks together and report our findings along with anyone else who wants to participate.

Hmm, interesting idea, but I'm not sure you can really pull off a 40 card deck. The reason being you're not going to have enough ships and the likely-hood of pulling the terrain you need to engage the ships you do draw is too low. 5 ships is just 12.5% of the deck, half of what you probably should have.

If you were to bump the minimum deck size for the challenge to 50 cards this would allow 10 ships and 10 terrain, which would significantly improve the possible deck builds.

what would really make it interesting is to throw out the deck stocking rules. Use as many exceptions as you want, the cards do not need to be supported.

I like the idea of these types of things, it's not always about building a *competitive* deck but trying out something you wouldn't normally use in a tournament and seeing how it goes. All the other ideas here are neat as well, getting rid of strength restrictions could get ugly fast, though. I'll post one next week and perhaps will use it Sunday or Monday for a game. I could do a 40 card deck, but the strategy would be so focused that once the details are out the deck's utility goes down (to 0?).  Me treasure is mine for the moment, but I will consider the request.

-I was thinking a deck with H1 Time Warps and/or Divergent Anomaly for the 5 hazards, Time Skips best choice for the O, T1 Microscopic Black Hole (1) and 4 of those T2/H2 plasma terrains that can cause damage, 5 ships that return to hand after discard such as S1 Bolaar or Corporate Pirate and require no resources to engage, 5 M1 Sexterean Crawlers, 5 B1 Personal Base (more phasers for free!), 1 or 2 Tax Collector and a couple C1 Suark Breed for crew, and then 4 L1 Luck cards and the exception, and L10 Galactic Cataclysm. The L10 will surely hurt your opponent more than you so long as they don't have the same (bad) idea. Ship and terrain make it to the reserve. 

Is it competitive? Not really, not much firepower and relies on simply moving ships out of your way to hit the HQ. Is it compliant with Eric's version of the rules? Again, no, but the L10 makes for a bit of fun for me as i like the idea of Russian Roulette in a non-real kind of way. It can easily be replaced by a warp engine breach or some other L1 or L2.

The terrain-as-hazard makes for some utility, and using ships without engagement costs would prevent worry as to resource denial from your opponent or getting no terrain on the draw. I would be interested in learning any other cards that could be included/swapped to take advantage of having mostly strength 1 cards. That's my initial thought on this challenge.

I don't think I have the one he's talking about but I think it works great with your concept.

I know some posters don't seem to like the format but I think its fun to explore the nooks and crannies of the game where few people go.

I say we should open up other challenges but I'm keeping this on at 40 cards per the rules. I understand the deck isn't competitive in general play but against other 40 card decks that follow the same rules it should be playable.

I've been thinking about a deck that steals your opponent's ships. You could get 2 O4 Mutiny ships into the game and a C1 used spaceship dealer, in a Filarian Deck. I've never played Filarians but they might be work and in a game with only 5 ships per side stealing one is a major swing in power.

The problem with the basic format is it leads to only one really useful conclusion: Patrol Ships are a must. Since you're forced to have a lower percentage ships in the deck than you should you need the recyclable ships.

Of all the Patrol Ships there's only one that really stands out for this format - the Garshain S2 Patrol Ship with it's 3 Phasers. 4x S2's and a S1 Bolaar (or Vektrean) Patrol Ship give you about the best firepower you can possibly muster. Although for a defensive version you might try 4x Council of Six S2 Patrol Ships, which are immune to Occurances and have 4 shields/2 phasers.

Everybody will have a Patrol Ship in their reserve, and the whole game begins to revolve around making the Patrol Ships go away long enough to hit the HQ (using the same basic cards, such as Time Skips and Time Warps).

Hmmm... I'm no expert but I think you can make a deck that doesn't use patrol ships that is playable. Though, I am thinking in terms of duels... multi-player might require what you described.

How about the Krebiz? You could get a low strength ship and a capsule together and make a ship which would be hard to match...

It might be hard to engage as well... I just don't know the cards well enough to comment without research.

Eric, does your database/CD offer still stand?

Lobo, I'm not going to be at David's on Sunday. Me and the girls are visiting my parents. I'll try to build a 40 card deck for Monday and I'll use the Bolaar deck against your Indirigans.

Are they the most-absolute-gotta-have-to-win-you-are-an-idiot-if-you-do-a nything-else ways to design a 40 card deck? No, but then again this goes back to having fun with the game, playing with friends (and possibly cards that have layers of dust on them), trying different things and remebering it shouldn't be about your record at the end of the day but the fun you had while playing.....Lobo

ships that are destoyed go to the time origin. use the tranoan terrain to get them back.

I think the deck would all depend on how many players. I think I could beat your patrol ship theme easily if it were a two player game.  But the same deck would not be so good in multi player.

Only the Mechad Patrol ship leader would be a threat, only because of it's TWO heavy weapons. Of course, ARMING those would be a serious challenge in the 40 card deck...

And the Mechad PSL is the ONLY Patrol ship that would threaten my deck. Assuming of course that you could arm the heavies. All phasers do is carve initials into Asteroid Shields. :)

The T-1 Small Moon, which is ALWAYS in the reserve fleet. Just so I know I can get it on turn 1. :)
