Here's the card text:

A6 Double Agent
-Played against an opponent's crew card.
-Double agent player uses crew card's functions on his turn also.
-If played against a spy card, look at that opponent's card draws. -Negated (discarded) by a spy card played to its location.

Player A players the Double Agent on Player B's crew.

The crew says "When in play in the fleet, provides X ability" would Player A get the use of that ability? The crew isn't in Player A's fleet, but he is working for Player A.

What are the thoughts?

Look up double agent in the dictionary... Or, consult your favorite spy novel or James Bond film.

A Double agent is exactly what it says it is: He works for both sides.
The card rule reflects this.

The crew that is the DA is assumed, because of the Double Agent card text, to be in BOTH fleets for purposes of card functions.

My play group decided on the opposite, since the A6 does not say to treat the opponent crew as if they were in play in your fleet.

I agree with what you're all saying though.

You aren't bringing this crew to the January Tourney are you? I really don't like rules arguments, and I really don't want to have to print out the latest version of the FAQ just to answer rules questions.

I live by a very simple set of rules: The rules on the cards take precedent, the last reaction card played takes effect first, and don't argue with the Wolfy. He is Ref and as such is the last stop in all rules discussions. His growl is law.

:)

Actually, it's because one of us (Elmer) decided on it and because we don't like to argue rules that we went with it anyway.

But don't worry, it doesn't look like we'll be coming down anyway.

Yeah, what Vercinorix said, why not? According to Rob, scheduling isn't an issue, and I had a juicy prize up for the winner.

Since the quarterly meets were going to masters Level games, I was going to put up some good stuff for the winner.

In this first one, I am offering to the winner, a T/B-10 Vektrean Asteroid Flagstar!

Still not coming?

The DA is to be treated as if he were in both fleets.

Seems the rest of the group is less enthusiastic than Rob and myself.  Not sure I’m up for the trip if just the 2 of us. If Rob is successful rousing up a few more then it’s much more likely to happen. Hope so. We’ll see…

Well, I spoke to Mark. I'll see if I can get in touch with Steve... think the four of us could overpower Elmer?

If a person doesn't want to travel, don't force them. Maybe he doesn't have the budget for it.

He's really not a fan of playing with spy abilities and reactionary worlds.

Making the RW a prototype is fine in his book, but he's not sure if it's worth it to play if spy functions are going to be popular. As I've said, it's just not fun.

Yeah, I agree with Elmer that spy takes a lot of the fun out of it for me, but I think we could get him over that.

It’s not just that though. The last time we went to a retreat in NY, many years ago, there was a distinct feeling of folks teaming up on our members. We were always targeted first, no matter where we sat or what cards were showing, and taken out before others were even targeted. No matter how good you are you cannot survive 3-5 players teaming up on you every turn. Don’t blame Elmer for not wanting to travel so far just to be hopeless fodder.

I’m sure none of the NJ group would want to come to MA if they knew we would always take them out first every game.

We’d have an easier time getting Elmer to join if we could somehow come up with a fair agreement that keeps it from being just NJ vs MA.  Or just agree to do just that.

In the last event I ran, I made it a point to let EVERYONE know if i spotted any evidence of tag teaming (And Geo and Harry were infamous for this) I would score 10 points of damage on the offenders Sector HQ.

I don't like team ups in an open table format.

As far as I am concerned, this is an Open table/free for all event. May the best man win, and winner take all.

As for terrain that has Spy abilities like Katryn and Spy Central, I'll give it some consideration.
But considering how much I have given in to so far, I'm not to inclined to give anymore ground. If I had to make a choice as to what to restrict, either the Spy Terrain or the Reactionary World, I think I made the right choice.

Hear ya. Most of us just want to have a good fair game. Just passing on his concerns.

Restricting RW is a good idea. That's how we play. It levels an otherwise too powerful card, but spy cards are a different problem. Yes, they can be a big advantage if one person has them and the others don't, but also takes the fun out of it.

I'd rather be surprised when I attack and a persons reacts then to look at his hand first and know what's coming. But if they're playing with spy cards, then I know I have to to stay even and play with them too. And before you know it we're all looking at everyone's hands. No more surprise. To me, the cards are too powerful AND change the play too much. Takes some of the edge off.

But I'm not as caught up on it as it may sound. Frankly, I usually win more with them. It's not going to keep from playing. Just voicing 2cents.

Well, I'm not into a lot of drama.  Back in the day, both I and Verc were Regional Reps, tasked with running local store Tourneys.

I've posted what the rules are for the January Tournament, It's a Masters level event with a small entry fee and a great prize.

Also back in the day, there would be NO restrictions, and yes, it favored Mr Suitcase. But it also favored the lucky ones.

I do agree we need to recruit new blood. Which is why broken cards like Reactionary World are restricted.

But enough is enough. Quit bitching about the Spy terrain.

If you don't like it, run Cryptologist.

If you don't like it, run Planet Gouges.

But whatever you do, just stop whining about it. The tourney rules are posted, and that is that.

Elmer is the man.

We could always play"Border wars"where for the first say 5 turns you can only target the persons sitting next to you but can play cards against anyone, this is a good way to keep dogpileing from happening and if we all agree to it we could do it wiether wolfie agrees or not(sticks tounge out at wolfie)

We can discuss stuff like this at the event, we'll get a general consensus.

We could also have some team games. Let people get it out of their system. Its hard not to want to help your friends, and its even harder when you help them for your own reasons for people to tell if your intentions are true or not. It would be cool to see what kind of team strategies people could think up.

I'm sure we'll have plenty of time for all sorts of other styles. The people who get knocked out will need something to do. :)

I was planning on implementing the Border Wars for the Masters Game to keep team ups from occurring.

We'll just have to wait and see.
