I was smoking and it came to me like a bolt from the blue.
It was gnawing at me that I coulnt see the point in restricting most of the cards most of you have been talking about
reactionary world marine depot etc.
1) Ihate dueling w/this game, love 4 players plus and lucky for me I have a fairly big group
2)since we restricted most of the card drawing we lack the abiliy to defend any of these combo cards with multiple cards, thus they die easily making a lot of combos not worth playing as they draw too much attention
Wow am I (we) playing a different game!

It's not so much a dueling issue though. Cat Rep, which your group RESTRICTED, is hardly a game ender in a multi-player format, but it is in a duel. (And I encourage quick ends to duels!)
Anyone who even thinks of challenging that logic should put up his cards for sale, and consider a new hobby.
The cards that make the MDRM decks work aren't even at issue in a 4+ player game. Here's why: Ok, player A gets off his MDM combo at about mid point of a game (say Turn 5) and ends his turn with 20-25 cards in his hand. Now, the other 3 players now know, that if they want a chance at winning, Player A has to be their only focus. And, no matter how good your deck is (It can even be a direct Clone of H.Hennings Tourney Tufor deck) you still aren't going to win. When the table decides it's time for you to die, you usually do. You may take one or two players down with you, but you aren't going to win.
The reason our group restricted the "Power Nine" was to make MDRM decks less viable. We wanted to see other themes, not just the card drawing craziness that GE had devolved into towards the end of the company. For example, I have a 200 card Hazard/Occurrence Clydon deck that has maybe 15 luck cards, if that. It's a shutdown deck. Cessation everything. It's great in a duel, and can hold it's own in a 4-5 player game, as long as I single out one player, and only go after him. If I try to harass the whole table, it dies real quick, as it doesn't have the reaction defense to sustain a defense against a concerted effort to remove it.

However, the spy terrains become less and less fun when 4+ people are looking at your hand on each of their turns.

That's just because they view you as a threat.

Well, all threats, perceived or otherwise aside, I don't have to see your hand if you're holding 20+ cards. It's an automatic reaction: Kill the MDM player first.

Yeah, but it seems like everyone I play with was always viewed as "the threat" at those old Tactical Retreats... they're not looking forward to it again. ;)

Sounds like a personal hang up to me. I never attended a Tac Retreat, so those statements don't apply to me.
In the grand game of GE, an MDM deck is asking for an ass-whooping if it showed up to a Masters table. It can't win. Period.

Imagine how *I* felt when I sat down at a table?

That bad eh? Well, you DID work for the company, so you were a bigger threat then Tony or Alan.

Oh, yes, that bad. There were many times where I was the first player eliminated, and then the game would continue from there. Even when George played, he never received such treatment. Even though he was just as good as I was (almost).
But you know what? I was a much better politics player than most. Buy me a drink sometime and I'll regaail you with the story of how I became the National Champion of Cosmic Encounters in 1997.
I use to play in the weekly game with Tony and Alan before I started working for the company. We typically played two games each night (about 8 players), and I would, more times than not, come away with a win.

Sounds like a plan. George ran a CCN deck in our weekly game this past Saturday, with H running a fully tuned Leopan and Ash running a Worked out full bore MDRM Argonian. I was running a "F with the Table" Vektrean deck, complete with 8) O-3 Bureaucracy... :) I tried to rally the troops against the CCN deck, but I got rebelled against, mainly because after the third B hit the table, people were slightly annoyed with me. After knocking me down to one terrain and barely a ship, H and Ash decided that the CCN needed to die, mainly because he kept buying back his M-4 Planet Gouge. Stupid Mad Scientist... I was able to rebound, putting a DN and a couple of cruisers and some much needed terrain into play, AND lay into George with the last volley that finished him off. Asher, taking over my old Magic title of Captain Chaos, learned the hard way that screwing with everyone gets you killed. He fell next. H and I battled it out, but my slimmer deck (120cards) vs his 150+ cards, proved to be his undoing. While I was drawing into the rest of my 25 ships, he was pulling low strength mess and an annoying patrol ship that wasn't doing anything. When he was down to a single patrol ship, he scooped. The Vektrean Armada had arrived.
