Can this be played to a ship?
The card text states:
-Played to a pirate card.
-When the pirate is discarded, discard one randomly selected card in an
opponent's hand.
-If the discarded card is of equal or lesser strength than this card, return
this card to the hand.
Now technically, a 'pirate card' is any card with the word 'pirate' in the
title, which includes many ships. However, A cards can't normally be
played to ships. So if I have a pirate ship, e.g. an S7 Independent Pirate
that is destroyed by weapons fire and is discarded because of it, can I
then play the Walk The Plank in reaction? Or, can I only play it on a crew
card with 'Pirate' in the title?
Any input would be welcome. I just got some boxes of Piracy and am
rebuilding my Bolaar deck and would like to know if I can use this card in
this way.

Since Walk The Plank specifies it may be played to a pirate card I would surmise it can be played to any pirate card, not just pirate crew cards.
Note also that under Definitions a Pirate Ship includes any Bolaar, Corporate Pirates, Nagiridni and Vicious Six ship. So you should be able to play Walk The Plank to any of those ships, in addition to any card with Pirate in the title.

I might think it could only be played to a Crew---Pirate.

I agree with Eric. The card text specifically states "pirate" and it is a reaction
card, so I don't think it's necessarily limited to crew cards. While the rules
do state ability cards are played to crew cards (or dragons or monsters as
applicable), the card text always overrules the rulebook. So while
technically, an A card isn't normally played to a ship card, the card text does
not specifically prohibit it and it does say it can be played to any card, that
as Eric has confirmed for me, is a "pirate" card.
Thanks again Eric.

It was poorly worded then, but I can understand the ruling at least.

Okay. No problem. It's easy to pair it up with a C4 Pirate Captain then.
With a Pirate Wench too I could save the Captain and still get to use the
Plank. :-) That sounds like fun...

Play it however you see fit.
I'm just letting you know what the cards original intent was. Doesn't mean that that couldn't change.
And, yes, it was poorly worded. It can join the hundreds of other poorly worded cards in a CCG.
