A friend and I tried to play this game with a couple of starter decks that I found (series 1, if that matters). To our disgust, the game went on for the better part of an hour, with no end in sight. We never even got to damage the HQ's. Are we playing this game wrong?

Here's an example turn:

I would take the combined fire from my two ships (per the rules, we are allowed to have only two ships/bases out at any time), and destroy one of his two ships.

If I had any terrain, or monsters, or hazards, or crew, or equipment, I would play those to beef up my cards (playing up to a maximum of three cards per turn).

At the end of my turn, I drew from my deck to replenish my hand (2 cards usually, or only 1 if I had ten or eleven cards in my hand).

On his turn, he would promptly bring out a new ship, attack with his remaining ship, usually destroying or fatally damaging one of my two ships. Then he would play any extra TMHCE cards, and draw.

On my next turn, I would replace my lost ship, attack his ships... ad infinitum.

Even if I wiped out his entire fleet of ships on a turn, he could usually put down a replacement ship, and thus I wouldn't be able to attack his HQ for another turn. =/

Eventually, one of us might have gotten the upper hand at this pace, but just as it seemed as if I might wipe out his fleet, he would play a card that would make one of my ships sit out a turn.

And so, we battered eachother's ships back and forth for what seems like forever, until we got bored and called it quits, with 22/23 HQ points remaining.

I'm sorry to post this rambling long message, but I'm very curious: are we playing this game wrong? Is there some way we could speed it up? I'm not keen to play again - ever - if I have to sit through another hour of back-and-forth.

It sounds like you have a good command of the basic mechanics. What
you seem to be doing wrong is that you're not getting enough strong
ships into play. This means that you need to 1) increase the number of
command points you generate so you can put more ships in play at one
time, and 2) get more larger ships into play.

Now that you've got the basics of the game, read through the deck
construction rules carefully, and build your own deck. Make sure to
include some crew cards or ships that generate command points, and
look for cards that work in combination together.

In general, try increasing the firepower of your ships with equipment
refits, and add some defense to your deck by putting in some reaction
luck cards to diminish the amount of damage your ships take.

That's just the basic, but the best place to go from where it seems you
are, based on what you've said...

Just quickly, the problem may be that you are using starter decks series one.  Off the top of my head, the highest ship and terrain are 6.  Just from the booster boxes you can go as high as strength 10.  Also strategy is very important when playing two player games and building your own deck in a 2-player game is important.  I ahve some extra ships and terrain of larger strength if you are willing to pay for the shipping. And I am talking you pay the exact shipping cost, after you get the cards .  I fyou only want a taste I cn send you 15 cards for 37 cents and you will see how much it improves your fun.

The biggest problem you may have is series one also has only about 60 cards to choose from, all very weak.  Series II Primary has over 400 up to strength 10.  For $35 from  ebay single to cases seller you can get 16 boxes of primary boosters and over 4000 cards easily and most likely 16 of those will be strength 10(one per box).  In the primary you get useful react luck cards that can make his phasers go fizzle or even can make him shoot his own ships and bases.  You can also get ships and characters which can add command points which allow you to have more ships than the begining numbers. go to eric's website and take a look at the cards available.
