Interesting... I'd always looked at their lack of shields as a diluting factor in deck efficiency. In order to play them I'd have to include cards to compensate for their lack. Why not just play a ship with shields included and use the card you'd protect the Geko with for some other meaningful reason?
In my experience GE fleets typically consist of one or two really hard units which the player defends with cards, card plays, and other ships. While the rest of his fleet is allowed to suffer so that the 'core' ships remain healthy and dangerous. In this theory you want the 'core' ships to have the most 'bang' for your buck and the Geko's increased weapon density certainly seems to play to that idea.
I'll have to put a deck together to experiment with this idea.
