How do you all play them? With 4 players, we've done a 2v2.
Each player sits diagonal of his/her (do any "hers" play?) partner. This is so your team only takes a turn every other turn... it'd be too imbalanced towards the first set of turns if teams went in a row.
The only thing we really change is that cards that say "all opponents" don't affect your teammate. "Each player" affects would, but they wouldn't count as an opponent.
Your HQ is still separate and your ally's ships can't defend you, but you can't be taken as an opponent either.
These games usually go 3-4x as fast as a free for all GE game.

We'll be experimenting with a variant of teams this weekend, before the Entity game. We called it "Odd Man Out" when it was used in Magic. Basically, in an odd number of players game, it starts as a free-for-all, but with a serious jockeying issue: When someone dies, the person directly across from you (Or every-other person in the case of 7 or 9 man games) becomes your team mate. Basically, you start looking very carefully at what people put into play, how they defend and attack, and generally draw a conclusion as to who you want to be teamed up with.
It really makes you pay more attention to the game as a whole, because if you aren't careful, someone else may decide who your team mates are for you!
